Spiritual Awakening

A spiritual awakening is a very personal journey of awareness. We call it an awakening because it is a process of "waking up" to an awareness of a world outside of your own. It varies from person to person, and what triggers it is also just as diverse. This is a pretty big topic, and even what I write about in this post won't cover it all. But my goal is to at least help you understand why a spiritual awakening happens, and how to get through it.

Before we incarnate, our soul sets a plan. This plan is the blueprint we would ideally follow when moving through our life. We select our genes (which includes our family, ancestors, and DNA; Disclaimer: sometimes it doesn't always work out according to plan), our patterns of growth, our trials, our strengths and weaknesses, likes or dislikes, our location (in this case, Earth, and in some cases, where we will be born and where we live), our spirit guides, our timeline, and more, all for the goal of our own evolution. When we incarnate on Earth, we are also giving ourselves free will. This is where it gets tricky. We are required to forget our plan to allow ourselves free will. Our plan can state that we just want to enjoy the journey and not remember what our soul had planned, or it can state that we want to remember pieces of our plan for another purpose. In either case, we assign spirit guides to help us along the way. Spirit guides are given access to our plan, so when we veer off it, or get confused, or need their help, they can nudge us in a direction that will help us stay on track. It gets a little more complicated with free will, but if you are ready to ask for help, they will help.

What triggers a spiritual awakening is usually a life-changing event. It is the moment when we start to ask questions that are bigger than ourselves, and need to know more. This often gives us an awareness that almost everything we knew and held on to, isn't what it seems. This life-changing event can be anywhere from a harrowing car collision, to a health crisis, to reading a book. You don't really know it is happening in the moment; however, often people who have experienced a spiritual awakening can pin-point the moment it all began. Spiritual awakening can also happen more than once, much like falling back to sleep after waking up in the night, in which case it would be a re-awakening. If this has happened to you, perhaps you weren't quite ready the first time, or, it was all according to your soul's plan.

When we spiritually awaken, several things happen. Our subconscious becomes aware of the human amnesia and starts to reject anything that isn't in alignment with your plan. This rejection is shown in the following signs and symptoms as an effort to transition this awareness to the forefront, your consciousness. These signs and symptoms include but are not limited to:

  • Sudden onset of food sensitivities

  • Sudden onset of environmental sensitivities

  • Mood changes

  • A need for boundaries

  • Letting go of toxic relationships

  • Questioning "Who am I?" or "Why am I here?"

  • Disconnecting from your family and friends

  • Re-evaluating your needs and desires

  • Awareness of signs and synchronicities (i.e. seeing 1111 everywhere)

  • A need for spirituality in your life

  • Feeling like you are the only one going through this

  • Being drawn to your spiritual teachers

  • Acquiring new friends that have or are awakening

  • Awareness of energies and the flow of energy

  • Developing an interest in spiritual tools or practices

Going through a spiritual awakening can be very daunting and overwhelming. It doesn't always have to be, and the transition can be quite smooth sometimes. Where we encounter problems is when we aren't willing to let go of what isn't serving us. The trick to having a smooth spiritual

awakening is to let go. This is easier said than done, however, so it's no wonder spiritual awakenings are considered to be rough experiences. As you allow things to happen, it will get easier. Sometimes, when you realize and accept this is what is happening, then a shift occurs and you are able to naturally take things as they come. If you are experiencing a particularly rough awakening, ask yourself, "what are you holding on to that is no longer serving you?"

"Where we encounter problems is when we aren't willing to let go of what isn't serving us."

The reason why a soul decides to incarnate is for growth and evolution. Earth is one of the hardest places to incarnate, and by doing so, the soul goes through a rapid growth. For those of you who have had really fast growth spurts, it can be quite painful. It really isn't that different of a concept, except instead of physical growth, it is soul evolution. The end goal for soul evolution is likely beyond our human comprehension, but I can say that we are taking inventory of any and all possibilities and experiencing everything there is to experience. That is a lot to experience! When a human spiritually awakens, that is yet another experience. But more than that, it is an expansion. It is a crossing of worlds, where you can make magic happen in a dimension where magic is not "supposed" to exist. When we spiritually awaken, we can tap into the universe to re-learn everything we thought we knew and heal from it.

  • Receiving universal knowledge

To summarize, a spiritual awakening is a call to action from your soul to be the best version of yourself. The term "spiritual awakening" has a tendency to imply that it's a quick process. While the trigger may have been, that isn't really the case. To process and integrate all the healing, knowledge, and experiences necessary to complete your soul's plan will take time. It may even take lifetimes. You are literally stripping away all aspects, figuring out what is meant for you, and re-building and embodying a new and more efficient version of yourself. Give yourself grace and trust the process.

To make it a little more complicated, another term that is thrown around a lot in the spiritual community is "ascension." To find out more about ascension and what it means, stay tuned for my next blog post!
